Tunkasina and
The Origins of Fear & Evil

A long time ago, when everything was new, all children played without fear.
To some of his children Tunkasina (Grandfather) had given strong eyes, and they liked the heat of the day. For these children Tunkasina put a big light in the sky, and they ran free over the prairie.
Other children had weaker eyes. They liked to play in the leaves and in the grasses under the trees. For these children Tunkasina put a little light in the sky, and it came out, when these children woke at the end of the day.
Everyone was satisfied. Day followed night, and night came after the day. No one had to worry. Tunkasina was happy, and he always came to visit.
His work was good.
But, then, something terrible happened.
One night the little light did not show up ! ! ! ! !
Deep darkness was everywhere. The night-children went outside, but right away they were lost. They ran back and forth, and their crying woke up the whole camp. Fathers could not find their sons, and mothers could not find their daughters.
Fear shook everyone. They had never felt this way before, and they didn't know what to do. Fear was like a damp fog creeping over everyone. It chilled the bones of the worn, old men. It confused the senses of the trusted, wise men.
Everyone kept turning around and looking over his shoulder. There was great danger.
Tunkasina heard the cries of his children and the running footsteps of the parents. He also felt the danger that was threatening his children.
He rushed down from his place to see what had happened.
He looked and looked -- and THERE IT WAS ! ! ! ! The sky was empty......There was no little light in the sky.
And he began searching for her. He looked and looked.....And then he found her.
She was sleeping with another man. She had been unfaithful to him, and she had neglected his children. When he found her it was terrible. He dragged her from the bed and tore her over rocks. He beat her and pounded her. He shook her and slapped her. He punished her and he shamed her.
Then he threw her away ! ! ! ! !
That was a long time ago.
Look at her now.
You can see that she is wandering here and there in the night. And she still has the marks and the bruises on her.
She will never be the same again.
She is shamed. When she gets close to the big light, watch her. She will hide her face. And, when she is far from the big light, she will look out again.
Maybe someday Tunkasina will take her back again.
This is how Fear -- Evil -- came to the children that Tunkasina always wanted to be happy.

BAD CULTURE IN INDONESIA

Bad Culture In Indonesia

Corruption has happened for many years and today it becomes a bad culture in Indonesia for three reasons.
Most adult Indonesian or foreigners have known and admitted that corruptions happen in many places. The daily newspapers, news programs on TV and radio have reported corruptions are done everywhere, almost in all departments or public services of this country. Corruptions happen in health, education departments and banks. When we manage to get some documents in public service offices, we usually need much money to pay. Manipulations happen everywhere.

The actions to eliminate corruption are weak. The ever stronger culture seems not to come to an end when the responsible institutions who have to reinforce the justice today commit corruption. This is the worst. Corruptions happen in police department, courts where judges, public prosecutors, lawyers make deals to do corruption. All of us also heard in the end of 2004, Probosutejo reported that he had bribed the Supreme Court, or called Mahkamah Agung which becomes the highest level where the justice can be obtained. Perhaps you have to try to come to the local courts and see what happen there. You will see practices of bribery and other kinds of corruption. Therefore, we can say that corruptions becomes our culture. Do you like it?

The citizens have no goodwill to fight against the corruption. They create the situations in which people have opportunities to do corruptions. The citizens like to break the rules because they are not disciplined. For example, in the street when they drive a car or ride motorcycle, they do not have the driving license or necessary documents. Then, they are caught by the local policemen. To avoid more difficulties, they like to bribe the officer. The officer let them go then. In other words, the citizens and officers are the same, doing corruption together. If only the people were critical, disciplined, and obey the rules, and willing to report any wrong behaviors, this country will not be number one corrupting country in the world.

Conclusion Based on the reasons, we can conclude that corruption is becoming a bad culture in Indonesia if it is not ended soon by all of us. It seems that there must be more severe penalty for the Corruptors. Do we still care about the future of this country?

The Girl With A Long Tongue

Sometime during the month of September two boys went hunting up towards the mountain and were gone a good many days. In that camp was this one woman who nobody was supposed to see, unless they had permission from their Chief.

This woman had a tongue which reached both of her shoulders. Some medicine man had done this to her, so she couldn't see past her tongue. That was the reason the Chief and the people in that village did not allow her to be seen by anybody except whoever was taking care of her.

Towards night, sometimes in September while the sun was just going down over the hill towards the north, this woman managed to sneak out of her tepee. It just so happened that everybody was in their tepees, settling down to get ready for bed.

The woman got out of her tepee, and let her tongue down and looked to the foothills. On this hill were the two boys who went hunting. As soon as they came on top of the hill and started walking towards the river, the girl took one look at them and the two boys turned into stone.

While the girl was wandering around, somebody spotted her and ran to the Chief shouting that the girl was seen outside her tepee without his permission. The Chief and all the people rushed out to see what the woman was up to. She said, "There was nobody around my tepee, and it was so quiet." Later on she said "I was looking towards the hill, when two people started coming down from the hills, and I don't want to say what happened next. It is up to you to find out." The Chief then sent some men up the hill a couple of miles to find out what had happened to those two boys.

When the men reached the bottom of the hill they found two boys who were turned into stone. The stones were 12 to 15 feet high. They were shaped as wearing two big packs on their backs.

Today it is said that this must have happened sometime in 1604. The stones are part of what can be seen from about nine miles from Fort McPherson on the right hand side of the Peel River toward the mountain. Nowadays, tourists come every summer to take pictures of it.

*Descriptive*

Sally Kristen Ride was born in May 26, 1951 is an American physicist and a former NASA astronaut who, in 1983, became the first American woman and then-youngest American to enter space.
Sally Ride, America's first spacewoman, doesn't look very different from a lot of other American professional women. She is attractive, with curly brown hair, dark brown eyes and a bright smile. She was one of five astronauts on the space shittle Challenger, which completed a succesful six day voyage in space in june 1983. What makes a woman want to go into space ?

Sally Ride grew up in Los Angeles, California. Her father is a professor at Santa Monica College, and her mother is a housewife. At Westlake High School for Girls, she was both an excellent student and tennis
player. Today she still looks like a sportwoman. She is 1.6 metres tall, weights 52 kilos, and is very fit. When she was still a student, she became a very successful tennis player. She thought about becoming a professional sportswoman. But she decided to continue with her studies at college, and later at university.
People who know her say she is intelligent and confident. She also thinks deeply about things. But she is not always serious. She is fun and enjoys humour, but she is in a hurry to get on to more important things. At high school she became interested in science. At university she studied English and Physics. After completing her studies at Standford University, she worked as a reseacher. In 1977 she was one of 1.000 women and 7.000 men who applied for the astronaut training programme. She was twenty five. She was one of thirty five women who were accepted to start the programme in 1978. As part of her training she learned to be a jet pilot and a flight engineer. She married during her training. Her husband, Hawley, is also an astronaut. They do not plan to have any children yet.
Ride has received numerous honors and awards, including the Jefferson Award for Public Service, the von Braun Award, the Lindbergh Eagle, and the NCAA's
Theodore Roosevelt Award. She has been inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame, and the Astronaut Hall of Fame, and has twice been awarded the National Spaceflight Medal (or National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Space Flight Medal). Ride is the only person to serve on both of the panels investigating Shuttle accidents (those for the Challenger accident and the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster). Two elementary schools in the United States are named after her: Sally K. Ride Elementary School in The Woodlands, Texas, and Sally K. Ride Elementary School in Germantown, Maryland.
On
December 6, 2006, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver inducted Ride into the California Hall of Fame, located at The California Museum for History, Women, and the Arts.
When Nasa decided to put a woman into space, none of Sally's friends were surprised that they choose Sally Ride. She has always been a person who wanted to go further. So when the space shuttle Challenger carried her on her first mission into space, Sally did what she had often done before she left the world behind.

The electronic media has changed people's way of life. First, it was the printed word. Then it was listening to the radio broadcasts. Then came television. people not only had the chance to hear but also to see pictures. Now, with the satelite Insat in operation, TV stations can televise national and regional programs.
The radio is still very popular with people away from the house. You can hear the news and music on radio in shopping centres and on the streets. Young people jogging in the park sometimes carry a 'walkman set'. They like to listen while they are exercising.
The viewers enjoy the programmes on radio and TV but do not think about their production. many people are needed to produce a programme. We only hear the announcer or see the person on the screen. Behind these people there are sound engineers, lighting engineers and camera crew.
The people we see are the announcers, the programme presenters and the actor and actresses. They must be properly dressed and well presented. it is their voice and their good presentation that make us watch them.
And then, there are the script writers and editors who prepare the script. They collect the news and edit it to give a clear message. They must also check on the time for the presentation of each item. Programmes on radio and TV follow a fixed time. So every programme must be timed carefully.
A computer is an electronic device which is used to store, process and analyze data or to solve mathematical calculations. A computer unit usually consist of four main parts. The first one is CPU. CPU stands for Central Processing Unit. This is considered as the brain of the computer as it analyzes and process all the data entered.
The second one is the keyboard. we use the keyboard to feed the computer with information nd commands. It looks just like an ordinary typewriter. Each button represent a different code.
The third one is the disk drivers. It placed in the CPU. A computer unit usually has at least two disk drives. A disk drive functions as a device that reads all the data from a diskette.
The fourth part is the monitor. It looks like a television set. It enables us to look at the data we feed into the computer. All the data is displayed on the screen.
Apart from these four main parts, we still need more additional parts, such as a mouse and a printer. A mouse is used to make it easier to run a command. A printer presents output in printed form. Another thing that we need to operate a computer is diskette. It may contain a program, a game or a word processing program. It may also contain sets of data. All the data that we create is stored or is recorded to a diskette as a file.
All these parts of a computer cannot work on their own. They must work together as a whole unit. If you have a personal computer at home, you must learn how to use it. You will find it very helpful.
