The electronic media has changed people's way of life. First, it was the printed word. Then it was listening to the radio broadcasts. Then came television. people not only had the chance to hear but also to see pictures. Now, with the satelite Insat in operation, TV stations can televise national and regional programs.
The radio is still very popular with people away from the house. You can hear the news and music on radio in shopping centres and on the streets. Young people jogging in the park sometimes carry a 'walkman set'. They like to listen while they are exercising.
The viewers enjoy the programmes on radio and TV but do not think about their production. many people are needed to produce a programme. We only hear the announcer or see the person on the screen. Behind these people there are sound engineers, lighting engineers and camera crew.
The people we see are the announcers, the programme presenters and the actor and actresses. They must be properly dressed and well presented. it is their voice and their good presentation that make us watch them.
And then, there are the script writers and editors who prepare the script. They collect the news and edit it to give a clear message. They must also check on the time for the presentation of each item. Programmes on radio and TV follow a fixed time. So every programme must be timed carefully.
A computer is an electronic device which is used to store, process and analyze data or to solve mathematical calculations. A computer unit usually consist of four main parts. The first one is CPU. CPU stands for Central Processing Unit. This is considered as the brain of the computer as it analyzes and process all the data entered.
The second one is the keyboard. we use the keyboard to feed the computer with information nd commands. It looks just like an ordinary typewriter. Each button represent a different code.
The third one is the disk drivers. It placed in the CPU. A computer unit usually has at least two disk drives. A disk drive functions as a device that reads all the data from a diskette.
The fourth part is the monitor. It looks like a television set. It enables us to look at the data we feed into the computer. All the data is displayed on the screen.
Apart from these four main parts, we still need more additional parts, such as a mouse and a printer. A mouse is used to make it easier to run a command. A printer presents output in printed form. Another thing that we need to operate a computer is diskette. It may contain a program, a game or a word processing program. It may also contain sets of data. All the data that we create is stored or is recorded to a diskette as a file.
All these parts of a computer cannot work on their own. They must work together as a whole unit. If you have a personal computer at home, you must learn how to use it. You will find it very helpful.
